What Are the Slack Channels?
The Slack platform offers individual Slack channels. These channels are chat rooms that you can specifically name and use for various purposes to communicate with your team. In this chat room you can collaborate on projects, share files, and communicate about all things related to the Slack channel topic. You can use multiple Slack channels and designate each Slack channel for a particular team, project, or reason.
How Do Slack Channels Work?
When using Slack channels, you can utilize these access areas as you would emails or texts but keep it all in one set location. You can share files with other people on your team that have access to the Slack channel, discuss projects with team members, and communicate back and forth. And, Slack channels aren’t just used by team members. You can invite clients to participate in specific Slack channels. For example, if you’re working on a client project, you can invite your client to interact with you via a Slack channel and discuss the project through Slack Connect or a guest account.
How to Check Your Slack Channel Activity
Here’s how to check your Slack channel activity and stay organized:
- Go to the Slack activity feed which shows chronological notifications by clicking on the Activity button on the left-hand side which lists all activity including mentions, unread messages, and threads; you can also filter notifications and view specific message activity
- For historical and real-time channel messages, you can type in the channel name in the search bar, narrow your search using date modifiers like before: or after:, and add specific time frames to pinpoint older conversations without endless scrolling.
- For analytics and checking this type of Slack channel activity, simply go to the Workspace icon in the top left corner, choose Tools and Settings and then click on Workspace Analytics where you’ll be able to monitor the metrics via the Channels tab
Why It’s Important to Monitor Slack Channel Activity
It’s important to monitor your Slack channel activity as you want to see all of the new messages when they come in, check on messages in which you need to reply to or do further work with, and keep an eye on analytics and metrics to know how each channel is operating. When you monitor your Slack channel activity, you’ll keep up to speed on communications as well as know what type of response each channel is getting from users.
