How to Archive a Slack Channel
Channels pile up fast in Slack — old projects, finished campaigns, temporary groups that outlived their purpose. Instead of deleting them and losing the history, archiving is the smarter move.

What Happens When You Archive a Slack Channel?
Archiving removes a channel from your active sidebar while keeping its full history accessible. Here's what changes:
- No new messages — the channel is locked for further discussion
- Still searchable — all messages, files, and links remain accessible
- No new members — users can't join or be added
- Integrations stop — connected apps and bots are disabled
Admins can unarchive a channel at any time to restore full functionality.
How to Archive a Slack Channel
On Desktop (Windows & macOS)
- Open Slack and navigate to the channel
- Click the channel name at the top
- Select Settings, then scroll down
- Click Archive Channel and confirm
On Mobile (iOS & Android)
- Open the channel and tap its name at the top
- Select Settings
- Scroll down, tap Archive Channel, and confirm
Who Can Archive a Slack Channel?
- Admins and workspace owners can archive any channel
- Members can archive public channels they created (unless restricted by workspace settings)
- Private channels require admin access to archive, regardless of who created them
How to Unarchive a Slack Channel
- Search for the archived channel using Slack's search bar
- Open the channel and click its name
- Select Unarchive Channel
The channel is immediately restored to active status.
When Should You Archive a Channel?
- A project is complete and the channel is no longer active
- A temporary channel (event, onboarding, short-term initiative) has served its purpose
- The channel has been inactive with no recent messages
- Workspace clutter is making it harder to find meaningful discussions
Archiving is always preferable to deleting — history stays intact and the channel can be restored at any time.
Automate Channel Archiving with Chronicle
Manually keeping on top of inactive channels is time-consuming. Chronicle automates the process by identifying and archiving inactive channels based on rules you set — so your workspace stays clean without the ongoing effort.
- Automated archiving — tracks activity and archives channels that have gone quiet
- History preserved — all messages and files remain searchable after archiving
- Workspace decluttering — keeps your sidebar focused on what's actually active
Instead of periodically auditing your workspace by hand, Chronicle handles it in the background.
