Naming Slack Channels
When you use new Slack channels, the first step you should take is to name the Slack channel. Once you give a Slack channel a descriptive name, your team and clients will know what should be discussed in that channel and be able to easily find it on the Slack platform.
What Happens to a Slack Channel Once Archived?
Slack channels are sometimes put away, or archived, which can be done manually or automatically. This occurs if the Slack channel is no longer relevant, contains duplicate information, or you just want to put it out of the general Slack channel area for organization purposes. Once you archive the Slack channel, it sits in the section of Slack with other channels that aren’t in use. While in the archived section, the channel is in a read-only format. If you need to make the channel active again, you can always pull it out of the archived section.
Can You Rename the Archived Slack Channel?
You may want to rename the archived Slack channel. Renaming a Slack channel often occurs when the user wants to reflect a change in the channel topic or purpose, keep the channel consistent with an ongoing project, add a date to the channel, or avoid duplicate names. However, you aren’t able to do so while it’s still in the archived section. The good news is there’s a way to give the Slack channel a new name with a few easy steps.
How to Rename the Archived Slack Channel
If you want to rename your archived Slack channel, here are a few steps to make this change possible:
- Unarchive the channel: Complete this step by going to settings and clicking “unarchive this channel” and click confirm.
- Check permissions status: If you’re a workspace owner or admin, you can rename any public or private channel. If you’re a channel manager, you can rename the channels you manage.
- Rename the unarchived Slack channel: To rename the Slack channel, you simply open the channel, locate the channel name in the header and click it, hit edit, and rename the channel.
- Archive the channel: If you want to move the renamed channel back to the archived section, go to the settings and hit “archive channel for everyone.”
